Why is home insurance for motor traders a problem?
Insurers deem there to be an unacceptable increased risk. That is both to damage occurring to your building and its contents. They fear even more the likelihood of a public liability claim. This could occur when a buyer or potential customer entering your garden, drive or property. Therefore most are reluctant to provide home insurance for motor traders.
If you currently insure your home, can you remember informing your Insurer with details of your new business activity when you started trading?
If not we strongly urge you to call your insurer immediately to check if they are happy to continue providing you with cover. Unfortunately you are more than likely to discover that they are unable to continue your policy and that your trade occupation invalidates your cover.
What should you do?
The worst thing you can do is to ignore this. You may have an Insurance document which shows the cover you are entitled to. However this may not be worth paper it is printed on. If in the event of a claim your insurers learn of your trade activity then they may decide to decline your claim.
