Plan was founded In 1989 by financial advisor Peter Georgiades, with the help of his eldest son Scott. The enthusiastic pair purchased a traditional high street brokerage in Catford, South London and creatively renamed it ‘Peter Scott Insurance’.
The business has always had innovation at its heart. Scott convinced his father to dispense with the old fashioned method of hand-written quote sheets, and the company began trading on computers. Their success led to the acquisition of Nicholas Paul Insurance in 1997. And the company moved to a new base in West Croydon.
In the 90s, direct insurers crowded the market, and personal lines brokers found it harder to survive in a more commoditised world. By now Peter’s middle son, Ryan, had established himself in the banking sector. Peter invited Ryan to come on-board as managing director. Ryan decided to focus the company’s strategy on niche products where a broker’s “personal touch” still proved of value.
Ryan, Scott and Peter entered the motor trade market, launching a specialist department, Trade Plan. They worked hard to understand their clients needs and to provide unparalleled customer service. In his new role as director of corporate relations, Scott laid the foundations for long-term relationships with leading insurers and set up a competitive rating panel. As a result, a loyal client base grew.
During the early 2000s, some said that digitalisation would eventually render many insurance brokers obsolete, as had happened when direct insurers emerged. Motor trade policies are complex, however, and customers benefit from specialist advice to select the right insurance policy. Plan’s leadership had confidence that providing a personal service and expert guidance would ensure the company’s future.
Plan also decided to do something that was unheard of at the time for a brokerage of their size; they created a purpose-built computer system. It was able to instantly quoted multiple insurers’ rates at once. This guaranteed that their clients found the perfect policy for them at the right price. Plan’s new technology also allowed them to serve more clients than ever before without compromising on customer experience.
In 2006, Peter’s youngest son, Grant, left a successful media career to join the family business, joining as director of marketing. Grant transitioned the company’s focus from display advertising to new media, including online marketing and social media. He also helped form the business’s holding company – The Plan Group Ltd. During the same year, the company launched into the private hire and taxi market, with the specialist department Taxi Plan. The company soon became a major broker in the sector.
In 2010 a rebrand was carried out. It consolidated multiple trading names under Plan Insurance Brokers. Not only was this easier to manage from a marketing perspective, it also better suited the company’s focus and standing within the arena of corporate commercial insurance broking.
In 2018, Grant moved from director of marketing to managing director, with Ryan becoming chairman.
The company still maintains the personal touch that is unique to a family business. Over the years, Plan Insurance has moved premises from Catford, West Croydon, Waddon, Purley, and now into their current office in Redhill.
