Top 5 Overlanding Holiday Routes in the UK and Europe

With the holiday season upon us but Covid still playing havoc with many travel plans, perhaps an overlanding trip is an obvious solution. There are so many scenic routes to choose from both on the UK’s shore or if you wish to venture further afield. Which one would be the best route for a perfect holiday? Here are just a few examples you could consider…

Before we begin – What is Overlanding?

Overlanding is becoming more and more popular with inquisitive individuals who yearn for knowledge and adventure, this vehicle dependent travel is not about the destination, it is all about the journey.

So whatever reason you decide to commit to an Overlanding holiday for, just remember that exploration is the most important part of your trip. If you want to travel via remote routes and areas an off-road vehicle will be vital . For extended trips, Overlanders will want to commit to self-sustained living and off-grid camping for the duration too. Though this is not an essential element of an overlanding vacation.

You can find out more about Overlanding on www.overlandsite.com and see our top 5 destinations listed below to whet your appetite.

Scotland NC500

Going across Scotland’s North Coast, this route goes over roughly 830 km and takes about 5-6 days to finish. The route itself is not to be driven at a quick pace, and not just because of the road; it’s also because you’ll want to enjoy the scenery.

Usually, the routes start somewhere at the Inverness Castle, but there are multiple other starting points that you may try out. Plus, since wild camping is legal in Scotland, you may stop wherever you want. Just make sure you are aware of the camping rules, as they may be different from the rest of the U.K.

Cumbria

Cumbria is a great place for overlanding enthusiasts, especially due to the beautiful landscapes. Honister Pass, for instance, is a great route for you to try out if you wish to remain in the north of England.

Running at around 120 km (or slightly more, depending on where you start), it takes about a day to get through this route. Bear in mind that the roads there are quite steep, so you’ll want to get a good 4×4 to take you through the route safely.

Pyrenees

Taking you from France to Spain, the Pyrenees route is a great holiday option if you are a person who enjoys the mountains. The Pyrenees stretch for about 430 km, uniting the two countries through a landscape packed with beauty.

To fully enjoy this route, you might want to take at least 3-4 days off. This is not a road to rush yourself through, and you also won’t be able to speed-drive through it. Plus, if you want to hike, then this is the perfect route to go through.

Route to Colle del Sommeiller

Those who want a holiday in the southeast of France might want to try the Route to Colle del Sommeiller. The distance itself is relatively small, and at 57 km, you’d think you’d be done with it right away. However, since only the first 6 km or so are somewhat paved, the rest of the road is rather difficult to go through.

That being said, with a good 4×4 off-road vehicle, you should be able to get the route done in a couple of hours and finish by camping there. The mountain air will certainly be good for you.

Silk Road

If you want more than just a simple holiday, you may want to try going down the Silk Road. Unlike other overlanding routes, the Silk Road is a network of routes. Going over 7,000 km, it would take at least a month or two to take in the whole beauty of the road. It’s more than a holiday; with the right remote gear, it can turn into a lifestyle.

The Bottom Line

The U.K. and Europe have multiple options for overlanders to try out. You just need to pick the one that is most convenient for you. Once you’ve made your choice and prepared for the trip, all you have to do is enjoy the adventure ahead of you.
