Waymo Driverless Taxis Set for London Next Year

Is London Ready for Waymo’s Driverless Taxis?

The world’s first “robotaxi” service could be heading to the capital. US autonomous vehicle firm Waymo has confirmed plans to launch driverless taxis in London next year, with fully automated rides expected in 2026. But as the tech giants roll in, cabbies are asking: what does this really mean for London’s drivers and passengers?

Waymo’s Big Move Across the Pond

Waymo, part of Google’s parent company, Alphabet, already operates in cities like San Francisco and Los Angeles. Now it’s turning its sights on London, the first European city set to host its autonomous vehicles.

The company’s cars will hit the streets with human safety drivers in 2025 while awaiting permits from Transport for London (TfL) and the Department for Transport to run fully driverless by 2026. The UK’s Automated Vehicles Act, due to take full effect in 2027, will allow these services to expand nationwide.

You can read more about the legislation in the UK Government’s Automated Vehicles Act 2024 overview.

According to Waymo, the move will bring “jobs, investment and innovation” to Britain. But black cab drivers aren’t convinced.

“It’s a Fairground Ride” – Cabbies Push Back

Steve McNamara, head of the Licensed Taxi Drivers’ Association (LTDA), didn’t mince his words, calling Waymo’s taxis “a fairground ride”. He argued that the vehicles often get “confused” on US roads and warned that London’s unique layout could be far more challenging.

Anyone who’s navigated the capital’s winding one-way systems and surprise diversions might agree. Even with the latest sensors and artificial intelligence, the question remains: can a self-driving car in London really handle the daily chaos of cyclists, roadworks and pedestrians?

Rules of the Road: TfL and Government Oversight

The government says it’s keen to support trials that make transport more efficient and sustainable. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander hailed the plan as “cutting-edge investment” that will help the UK “lead the world in new technology”.

But for London’s professional drivers, regulation and accountability are what really matter. Unlike licensed taxi and private hire drivers, autonomous car companies don’t have to study The Knowledge or deal with TfL inspections in the same way. Many cabbies fear an uneven playing field where global corporations operate under looser rules.

The Licensed Taxi Drivers’ Association has called for stricter oversight and public consultation before any driverless taxi services go live.

Safety First… But Who’s Responsible?

Waymo insists that safety is its top priority. The firm claims human drivers are “12 times more likely” to be involved in pedestrian-injury incidents than its autonomous cars. Each vehicle uses lidar, radar and high-resolution cameras to scan its surroundings, even in darkness or rain.

Still, the idea of being driven by software doesn’t fill everyone with confidence. For many Londoners, the trust built over years of riding with black-cab drivers can’t easily be replaced by a robot.

Can Black Cabs and Robotaxis Coexist?

The future of London’s streets may not be a battle between man and machine, but a blend of both. Some experts predict that autonomous taxis could handle short, predictable routes, while licensed drivers continue to serve more complex journeys.

What’s certain is that the profession will keep evolving. Just as TomToms, satnavs, and apps reshaped the trade over the years, self-driving taxis are the next big disruptor. And London’s cabbies, known for their adaptability, are unlikely to back down quietly.
