The Surprising Truth About EV Battery Life

For years, one of the biggest barriers to electric vehicle adoption has been concern about battery life. Buyers worried that ageing batteries would lead to expensive replacement costs and poor resale values.

New evidence suggests those concerns may have been overstated.

Real-World Evidence Is Changing Perceptions

A recent article, reported by the Wall Street Journal, highlighted growing real-world evidence that modern EV batteries are proving remarkably durable. One UK EV specialist has driven a Tesla Model 3 more than 247,000 miles while still regularly completing long-distance journeys with no significant issues reported.

This matters to motor traders because confidence in battery longevity is beginning to influence buyer behaviour in the used market.

Research cited in the article suggests that after five years, many EVs still retain around 95% of their original battery range. Meanwhile, more recent battery technology appears to have significantly reduced battery failure rates compared with early-generation electric vehicles.

The UK market is already reflecting this shift. According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), used battery electric vehicle (BEV) transactions increased by 32% in Q1 2026, reaching a record 86,943 sales and accounting for 4.3% of all used car transactions. The growth indicates rising consumer confidence and an expanding pool of second-hand EV buyers.

Used EV Demand Continues to Grow

Encouragingly for dealers, demand is also strengthening relative to supply. Auto Trader reported that used EVs were among the UK’s fastest-selling vehicle categories during 2026, with electric vehicles selling more quickly than equivalent petrol and diesel models in many parts of the market.

There are also signs that residual values may be stabilising after a period of sharp correction. Market analysis published during 2026 reported that used EV prices had stopped falling for the first time in more than three years as demand increased and available stock reduced.

What does this mean for motor traders?

Battery longevity is becoming less of a concern for buyers and more of a selling point. As evidence builds that modern EV batteries can comfortably withstand high mileages, used EVs are becoming easier to retail and finance.

For motor traders, the opportunity is clear. Consumer confidence in electric vehicles appears to be improving, used EV sales are growing strongly, and fears around battery reliability are gradually being replaced by real-world data. Dealers who can demonstrate battery health and understand the evolving EV market are likely to be well placed as demand for used electric vehicles continues to mature.
