What vehicles are eligible for Last Mile Delivery Insurance?

Plan can arrange Last Mile Delivery Insurance policies for firms using all types of vehicles. That may include electric bikes, cars and vans. Alternatively standard push bikes, cargo bikes, scooters, motor cycles, cars and vans.

What is Last Mile Delivery Insurance?

Last Mile Delivery Insurance is essentially a courier policy. However due to the non-standard vehicle types and business models that are used by last mile delivery firms it is often more challenging to obtain competitive insurance premiums for last mile delivery.

A Last Mile Delivery Insurance will be designed to meet the needs of firms or individuals that deliver customers goods often using modes of urban mobility such as a bike or electric vehicle. The motor liability for an electric car will need to be covered by law. Firms will also want to protect their assets, for example to protect a bike against theft of damage when it is secured as a drop off is made.

Last Mile Delivery drivers are often attempting to make multiple drops under time pressure whilst searching for drop off points in congested areas. These factors often lead to high claim frequencies.

The value of the parcels and packages being delivered should also be considered for cover under a separate Goods in Transit policy.

Client Risk Management Services

Having the right risk management in place with correct up to date document templates, checklists and guides can help you minimise liabilities that can have a substantial impact on your companies’ profits.

Plan offer your business personalised health and safety documents, risk assessments, method statements and much more. These additional documents are supplied to you at no extra cost when you take out a policy with Plan.

Our risk management services can include business continuity templates (that will need updating annually) which you can use as guidance and to track your business operations. With this, you will also receive regular notifications regarding legislation changes that are relevant to your business.

Who requires Last Mile Delivery Insurance?

Last Mile Delivery firms that are paid to deliver goods to customers and use a motor vehicle have a legal obligation to have motor insurance.  It’s important to ensure that your company has appropriate protection. A standard private or commercial vehicle policy does not supply cover for the delivery of goods. You will need a specialist Last Mile Delivery courier insurance.

Last Mile Delivery firms will legally also need employers’ liability if they have staff. We would recommend Goods in Transit as well as cover for their own business assets as a minimum level of protection.

What is the risk of not taking out Last Mile Delivery insurance?

Motor insurance is a legal requirement. If your firm is driving without this cover it is illegal and you could face prosecution.

Without suitable Last Mile Delivery insurance your motor vehicle and the items being delivered also risk not being covered. Should an incident occur in connection to your Last Mile Delivery business you may not receive reimbursement for your own and your customers’ losses.

Does Last Mile Delivery Insurance include cover the items being delivered?

Last Mile Delivery Insurance does not provide cover for the customer’s goods. You will need to arrange goods in transit cover for this protection to be put in place.  Your account executive will discuss the worth of the items being delivered in order to specify both an individual limit and the total value of the goods being transported. Cover will be provided for theft and damage though policy exclusions will apply. So you should take time to read the small print and have any points that aren’t clear explained to you.
