PLAN’S GUIDE TO TAXI INSURANCE

Below we have compiled some commonly asked questions that explain the key features of Taxi Insurance, from essential elements of insurance to optional add-ons, to ensure that you and your business have the right cover.

Who needs Taxi Insurance?

UK law requires that if you drive passengers for a living, then a standard car Insurance policy is not sufficient. There are many reasons for this, one main one being that you have members of the public in your car, who may hold you liable should something go wrong.

There are many considerations to be made when looking at taxi Insurance. We understand that your most important objective is to avoid missing work for any reason.

Understanding the precise nature of your business is important and having the help of professional taxi insurance broker can save you time and money, as well as ensuring that you are adequately covered for all risks that you may face.

What type of Taxi Insurance do I require?

One of the benefits of using a specialist taxi insurance broker like Plan is that we can refine your hire and reward policy to suit your exact needs. We can help you reduce your business’s taxi insurance costs by providing cover bespoke to your needs, avoiding you paying for features you may not need.

Key considerations include:

  • Are you working from a rank and able to pick people up on the move or do you operate a pre-booked service?
  • Do you operate a specific vehicle purely for hire purposes that only you drive? Or do you also require cover for social domestic pleasure use in the vehicle and additional drivers?
  • If you run a taxi business, are all of the vehicles owned and managed by the company?

Answering these questions will allow us to understand the type of hire and reward taxi insurance cover you need, and reflect that in the cover options offered.

Once you place your business with Plan, you’ll be able to take comfort in the knowledge that your policy is being handled by taxi insurance specialists.

Self Employed London Cabbies

If you are a self-employed London Cabbie, we can arrange a Black Cab Insurance policy that provides cover for both pre-booked work and roadside pickups. It can also come with free breakdown cover (on selected policies).

Taxi Fleet Insurance

If you have a number of drivers working for you, Taxi Fleet Insurance can be a cost effective way of insuring all your vehicles under one policy with only one renewal date to remember. Depending on the type of taxi fleet policy you purchase you can either insure your employed drivers to use the vehicles, or offer them out to contractors on a self drive hire basis.

Additionally, a taxi fleet policy might be useful to you logistically – for example if a driver is off sick and you need another licensed driver to cover using the same vehicle at short notice.

You will also be able to include taxi insurance for minibus vehicles that you own on your policy.

What is the difference between hire & reward cover for cabbies and private hire drivers?

Private hire drivers can only accept pre-booked passenger collections. Therefore they require Private Hire cover (also known as Minicab Insurance) that does not provide cover for roadside hails.

One of the many differences is those taxi drivers who take spontaneous un-booked passengers are more likely to need additional cover for a cash float and their takings that they keep in their vehicle.
