Take a journey on Britain’s roads and the chances are you will see a Royal Mail Group vehicle.
Royal Mail has a fleet of 33,000 vehicles and 90,000 drivers travelling 605 million miles each year. “As the result of the scale of our operations and the commitment of time, financial and intellectual capital we make to them, we have the potential to influence general road safety within the wider communities in which we operate. We have directly ‘touched’ over 50,000 employees with our Driver Risk Assessment (DRA),” says Royal Mail’s representative.
Postal vehicles are predominantly those used for Royal Mail collections and deliveries, but also include Postal Engineering. The Fleet changes year by year as new vehicles are tested for suitability of delivering the mail.
RMG is one of the first fleet operators in the UK to have a road safety program on large scale. The company introduced training modules such as Safe Driving Pledge and Risk Foundation to ensure that drivers comply with RMG’s procedures.
Royal Mail also introduced speed limiting the fleet to reduce the level of road traffic crashes, related injuries and fatalities.
Moreover, the use of telemetry in RMG’ vehicles shows how the vehicles are being driven, if they are speeding or if they are continually harsh-braking. Therefore, necessary solutions can be utilised to change behaviours.
